Experience Pays

By Kendall Davies

When it comes to internships, we all want a paid opportunity. Who wouldn’t? We are college students and need every dollar we can get. However, when it comes to the careers we are working toward, experience pays. So before turning down an internship opportunity just because it is unpaid, look at the bigger picture.

Last summer, all I wanted was a paid internship. I couldn’t afford to not have one. However, spring semester was ending and it was crunch time. I was offered an unpaid internship, and I took it. When looking at the bigger picture, I knew having the experience was more important. I knew all the worries I had with finances would fall into place, and they did.

At the end of the summer, I was so happy I made the decision I did. The opportunities, experiences and people I met during my internship were invaluable and are worth far more than any paycheck. Not only did I have incredible networking opportunities, numerous portfolio pieces and experience under my belt, I had a life changing experience. This internship opportunity changed my outlook on what I want out of my career and the aspirations I want to work toward. Look at the bigger picture. It’s better to have an unpaid experience compared to not having any opportunity at all.

So, I challenge you to look at the bigger picture when internship opportunities, whether paid or unpaid, come your way. Who knows, you could have a life changing experience that is worth more than any paycheck.
