SuperParty & My PRSSA Journey: From the Eyes of a Member Relations Chair

Hi Readers, this is your Member Relations Chair Katie Bilka speaking!

Since the day I sent in my application for Ball State, I declared a Public Relations major. Fast forward to my sophomore year already, and I’m still going strong as a PR major, and have added Emerging Media and Design concentrations. I heard about PRSSA at SuperParty the fall of my freshman year when I went with a friend of mine who shares the same major as me. Her and I both expressed interest in the club. I was already a part of a few time-consuming extracurriculars and wanted to adjust to being away at school first before adding more to my plate, so I decided I would join the next year- and that’s exactly what I did.

Last semester, I decided it was time to join PRSSA. I had adjusted to the life of a college student fairly well, and realized that I needed to get a jump on adding professional experiences to my resume. I didn’t go to a ton of the meetings due to my busy schedule, but the ones I did attend allowed me to see the value of being in a professional club with people who have like-minded goals and passions. At one of these meetings towards the end of the semester, the executive board at the time expressed interest in receiving applicants to fill vacant spots for the upcoming semester. I knew I wanted to be on exec eventually, but I figured I was too new and inexperienced to be able to fill a spot; however, the president and PR director convinced me into applying and now we’re up to speed.

As a part of my Member Relations responsibilities, I’m in charge of running our PRSSA booth each fall and spring SuperParty. Essentially, I get to explain all of the great things our club offers, not only to PR majors, but literally any other major because PR works so well with each one! It was a little rocky at first for me because I still don’t know all the ins and outs of the club, but having support from our faculty advisor and a majority of exec helped me form a pretty solid elevator pitch and get quite a few recruits. I’m looking forward to next fall’s event and getting to meet new people, especially since I’ll have a much better understanding after this semester concludes.

Overall, I’m super grateful I got pushed into joining exec so early on. It helped me realize that you have to jump at any opportunity you’re given, and that you’ve got to be optimistic about it no matter what the circumstances are. This is helping me become a more well rounded person, in addition to helping other club members and potential members grow. I can’t wait to see what the rest of my time in PRSSA will hold!

Member Relations Chair, Katie Bilka out.
