As we enter into the New Year it is natural to come up with the basic New Year’s resolutions that everyone seems to have. There are always the typical ones, to work out more, eat healthy, etc. Although it is important to focus on our personal lives and our health, it is also important to set goals that are career and school related that will motivate us as we kick off the New Year. Check out these five suggested New Year’s resolutions that every PR major should have for 2017:
Follow the news and current events
As a PR major, being in the know with what is going on in the news is very important. As busy college students, it can be hard to find the time to pay attention to the news. For some college students, it can be even harder to follow the news without having cable. Make it a goal to follow news outlets on twitter, sign up to get news notifications sent to your phone, or subscribe to a news outlet such as the Skim.
Grab lunch with PR majors
This sounds so simple but I have learned so much just from grabbing lunch with fellow PR majors. This is a great way to talk about classes, internships, resume building, or just give each other advice. We all have different experiences as PR majors and getting to know each other and learn from each other can help us all learn in different ways.
Create a connection with a professor
Getting to know a professor on a personal level can be helpful in a lot of ways. Not only could they be a potential reference for you to use, but they could also provide you with a lot of insight that can help you grow professionally. Stop by your professor’s office hours, chat with them after class and get to know them better!
Write more
Writing is something we will do for the rest of our lives as PR majors. Now is the time to learn to love writing and learn to be good at writing. Make it a goal to either write in a journal or start a blog. The more writing experience you have, the better writer you will be!
Upgrade your resume
January and February are prime times for internship and job postings. Take the time to clean up your resume and have several sets of eyes look over it to give you feedback. The sooner you clean up your resume, the sooner you can apply for internships or jobs.
A new year is a chance to create a new beginning and start new habits. It is a time to improve yourself in any way that you wish to. This is YOUR year, make it a great one!
