What PR did for me

By Kelsey Kolb

During my freshman year of college, I was stuck.

I had no direction as to where my life was heading and it was scary. As I was doing my research, I came upon an article about emergingprofessions. I continued to read the fascinating article and stumbled upon a category that interest me. It was about entertainment andmedia. It was about public relations.

As I continued to read, I started to understand why these jobs were so important. Public relations was almost about everything in communications put into one profession. The major ignited a fire inside of me and I continued to research. Articles stated all of the facts and jobs that went along with public relations: PR was entertainment, news, media, social media, sports. The list went on and on. It was everything I wanted and more. I realize now that public relations is a hidden gem. From my freshman year on, I immersed myself in everything PR. I got involved in organizations on campus that pertained to public relations, like PRSSA and Cardinal Communications. I searched for companies that needed help with social media. I did everything I possibly could to involve myself with this major.

I am excited for my future. I do not feel stuck. I feel like I’ve found my purpose and that is more than I ever expected from my college major. I truly believe that doing your research can help you to find a profession that ignites a fire in you. That will keep you motivated to continue learning.
