Why Public Relations and My Life Go Hand in Hand

By Brianna Helm

People always told me that when you start college, you become the person you want to be, everything from the past could stay in the past and the person you wanted to be would be the one you created. It’s almost like you become your own client. I took a closer look at my college career and realized you start to use your public relations skills in daily life.

When you start college, you can create a completely new brand for yourself. The person you want to be seen as becomes your main focus. Having the ability to create your own personal brand ties into the creative aspect of the PR world. What you post on social media is a representation of your own personal brand. The skills and experience that you put on your resume throughout college become a writing task and branding moment, similar to the ones you’ll experience in your career. Networking and getting involved on your college campus correlates directly with the networking you see in the professional world. Being on the lookout for the next big opportunity helps you hone your research skills, another important aspect of PR. Working quickly and effectively within the PR community are skills that one must obtain to be good at what they do. Day-to-day, you have to make impressions that will last a lifetime. The impressions you make are key in obtaining a successful PR career.

All in all, the skills you gain through learning how to become a PR practitioner are skills that everyone needs. Creating my personal brand throughout college has been challenging and exciting. I have had to overcome many different events that could hurt my personal brand, but knowing how to fix and overcome these obstacles has helped me dramatically. How have I learned to fix these problems? Through my PR classes, PRSSA and other student organizations. I have had to be creative throughout the whole process to make myself stand out among my competitors on campus. At the end of the day, the only person who could really speak about my own brand is myself. Working to create my personal brand has and will continue to teach me more and more about what I will be doing later on with my own clients as a PR professional.
